Michael Logan Cline’s Expertise I am the Chief Geoscientist at RIZZO International in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with over 20 years of applied geoscientific research and consulting experience in North America, Europe, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. In my current role, I manage a multidisciplinary team of geoscientists, engineers, and seismologists who specialize in geohazards. The majority of my professional experience has focused on evaluating and mitigating geological hazards, including active faulting, landsliding, and flooding. Most of my work falls into several broad categories: probabilistic studies for geological hazards, including probabalistic seismic, fault displacement, and volcanic hazard analyses (PHSA, PFDHA, and PVHA), landscape evolution including investigation in tectonic geomorphic, volcano-tectonic geomorphic, and hillslope and fluvial geomorphic surface processes; and high-resolution instrumentation and monitoring of tailings dams, actively deforming slopes, and other landforms and structures. My diverse professional and academic background enables me to address complex problems in geosciences and engineering, which often require multidisciplinary, state-of-the-art methods to provide quality solutions to clients. I maintain strong connections to the academic research community to stay at the cutting edge of methodological approaches. My core expertise in methods includes paleoseismic trenching, geochronology, remote sensing and spatial analysis, numerical modeling of geomorphic processes, field geomorphic mapping, geophysical methods, and other geomorphic and geological tools that are aimed at constraining the timing and rates of geological processes. An integral part of my methodological expertise is in GIS and other spatial analysis applications, as well as geophysical, geological, and surface hydrological modeling software. I am an author on numerous peer-reviewed journal articles on wide-ranging topics and have been awarded numerous grants, including two National Science Foundation (NSF) grants as Principal Investigator and Co-Principal Investigator. As a result of my experience and expertise, I am a current Working Group Member for the American National Standards Institute / American Nuclear Society (ANSI/ANS) Criteria for Investigations of Nuclear Facility Sites for seismic hazard assessments. As a core Working Group Member, I am responsible for updating the existing criteria and guidelines for performing geological, seismological, and geotechnical investigations at nuclear sites.
